SAGUACHE COUNTY -- Chester Havens, Sr. will run as a write-in candidate for the position of Saguache County Sheriff against incumbent Sheriff Mike Norris and Republican candidate Richard Pascoe.

Veterans memorial dedicated at La Garita Cemetery

LA GARITA -- Area residents gathered at La Garita Cemetery Sunday to participate in the dedication of one of several veterans memorials erected in the county.
Monuments also have been dedicated at Villa Grove Cemetery and Hillside and Chicago Cemeteries near Saguache. A marker will be dedicated at the Crestone cemetery in September.

Firefighters host extrication seminar

CENTER -- Center Fire Dept. volunteers attended an in-house seminar and hands on training for vehicle extrication last Saturday, hosted by L. N. Curtis rescue specialist Jason Feinstein.

Counties fighting takeover of DSS by state

SAGUACHE -- Colorado counties are weighing in with the state to keep their Social Services departments independent of state control following the passage of Colorado Senate Bill 10-171 last month.
The legislation establishes a new independent investigative panel headed by a child protection ombudsman, independent of the Dept. of Social Services (DSS), to impartially review cases and address community concerns.
