SAN LUIS VALLEY — According to District Attorney Crista Newmyer-Olsen, an increase in Valley homicides has brought in extra help from the state attorney general’s office to prosecute the cases.

“We have more open homicides now than I saw in the past eight years as a deputy DA,” Newmyer-Olsen commented. “Also this year we have five deputy DAs and last year we had six.”

There are currently 10 open homicides and about 20 defendants, she noted, and the district is overrun with court cases. The Colorado Attorney General’s office violent crimes assistance unit offers assistance to rural districts in such cases and has sent help from Denver to lend a hand to deputy district attorneys.
