Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,
We the Martinez family would like to thank all of you runners, walkers, and golfers who participated in the Sgt. Glen Martinez Memorial Scholarship 5K Run/Walk and Veterans Golf Tournament on May 25 and 26 to support and honor Glen for his service to his country and his ultimate sacrifice to help keep our freedom alive.
We want to thank the people who so graciously donated their time to volunteer their services to make these two events possible. We would like to thank Mark Haas for the use of the Monte Vista Golf Course and Pro Shop, all his hard work and time put in to make the golf course perfect. Thank you to Ron and Pat Rinebarger for providing the most delicious smoked pulled pork for the golf tournament meal and lending a side by side four-wheeler for Ron to use at the 5K race. Thank you to Mike Sanchez for making the most delicious green chili to spread over the scrumptious burritos made by Jessica and Jeff Simmons for after the race breakfast. Thank you to Peggy Martinez who served the breakfast and made sure all of the participants were well taken care of.
To all our stores: Top Choice, Safeway of Monte Vista and Alamosa, Wal Mart and Walgreens for donating water, Gatorade and fruits for our runners and walkers we say thank you very much. Thank you to Danica Simmons for KSLV broadcasting on Valley View and the PBS for Glen’s events, and to the Monte Vista Journal and the Valley Courier for all their great advertising across the San Luis Valley.

Glen made the ultimate sacrifice May 2, 2008 while serving in the United States Marine Corps, Operation Iraqi Freedom. We know Glen would be very proud to know all the support and participation he received from our communities in the valley and from friends and families from various parts of Colorado and California who unselfishly honor him every Memorial Day weekend. We hope that you all enjoyed yourselves, got to visit with long- time friends and relatives and got some good exercise.
