Nathrop woman dies in crash on Poncha Pass

SAGUACHE COUNTY— According to a report by the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), at approximately 8:55 a.m. on June 28 the Colorado State Patrol dispatch was advised of a one-car rollover crash on Highway 285, approximately one mile south of the summit of Poncha Pass.
Investigation revealed that a 1998 Ford Escort station wagon, driven by Adriene Schubkagel-Lawrence, 53, of Nathrop, was northbound when the vehicle went off the right side of the road in a left-hand curve. The vehicle came back onto the road, and the driver over-corrected causing the vehicle to rotate in a clockwise direction off the right side of the roadway.
The vehicle traveled off the right side of the road where it rolled down a steep embankment coming to rest on its left side. Schubkagel-Lawrence was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected during the crash. She was later pronounced dead at the scene. The crash is still under investigation, but speed is not considered a factor.
This is the second fatal crash this week that the CSP has investigated in the San Luis Valley where the occupant was unrestrained. CSP is begging people to wear their seatbelts; they DO save lives.
