COLORADO SPRINGS — El Pomar Trustees approved $82,000 allocated to 11 nonprofit organizations and government agencies in the San Luis Valley region at the Foundation’s May Trustees meeting. Through the Foundation’s grant making process, the following organizations were awarded grants: 

ALAMOSA — On July 10, a one-year anniversary celebration was held at the Hope in the Valley addiction recovery center in Alamosa.  David Herrera, Community Engagement Coordinator with Hope in the Valley, told the Valley Courier that over one hundred well-wishers attended the event, underscoring the crucial role of community support in the center's success. 

ALAMOSA — Phil Weiser, Colorado’s attorney general and 2026 candidate for the Democratic nomination to be governor, pledged to the people of Colorado to block the policy agenda of President Trump in those areas that were bad for the state of Colorado and its people. Six months into the administration, Weiser is proving time and again that he is true to his word. 

MINERAL COUNTY - Mineral County Sheriff Terry Wetherill was pleased to announce the promotion of Mike Castro to the position of Mineral County Undersheriff. Castro has been on the force since moving to Creede in January and is eager to further serve the community to the best of his ability.

ALAMOSA – Adams State University is proud to announce the successful five-year reauthorization of its educator preparation programs, as unanimously approved by the Colorado State Board of Education during regular meeting in May. This reauthorization affirms the quality, effectiveness, and continued impact of the School of Education and School of Counselor Education in preparing the next generation of educators and school leaders. 

ALAMOSA — On Thursday, June 26, Representative Matt Martinez was formally recognized by the leadership at San Luis Valley Health for his support of rural healthcare and his advocacy for key pieces of legislation this term. Rep. Martinez, who represents Colorado House District 62 and is the Majority Co-Whip, has been a vocal advocate for rural healthcare in Colorado since being elected to his position in 2023.  

MONTE VISTA - On June 19, Monte Vista City Manager GiGi Dennis talked about the upcoming Ski-Hi Stampede that will take place July 9-13, and how a special day has been designated for Stampede this year. 

CREEDE - According to a report submitted by a local resident in Creede, a petition to recall Creede Mayor Jeffery Larson and Creede Board Trustee Lori Dooley has been deemed sufficient. Efforts to recall the two members of the City of Creede began earlier this year. 

CENTER - On June 23, the Town of Center held a community workshop at the Blue Loft in downtown Center to get input from the community on the North 90 Project.  

COSTILLA COUNTY — The Costilla County Sheriff’s Office reported that early in the morning on Monday, June 23, a visitor to the Shrine of the Stations of the Cross in San Luis found a deceased body on the steps. With assistance from the Colorado Bureau of Investigations, Costilla County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation.   

Senator Hickenlooper's Constituent Advocate team will be at the Recreation Center in Alamosa on Saturday, June 28, from 10am to 4pm. This team is able to help with a wide variety of issues.

While hiking in a remote area of Saguache County, a hiker discovered what turned out to be the remains of 55-year-old Edna Quintana. Ms. Quintana was first reported missing in May of 2023. Our deepest sympathies to her family.

DENVER — Guadalupe Parish Credit Union recently announced that Robert A. Chavez, President and Chief Executive Officer, has been appointed by Colorado Governor Jared Polis to serve on the Division of Financial Services Board of Directors. 

DEL NORTE - For almost a year, the Town of Del Norte has been in one phase of construction or another but thanks to precise planning by the team of engineers, the end is finally in sight. According to Del Norte Town Mayor Shelly Burnett, the construction is nearing its end, and the results will be more than wonderful for the beginning of summer. Reminder that businesses on the south side of Grand Avenue are open and can be accessed by way of 6th Street. 

RIO GRANDE COUNTY - At the end of May, Rio Grande County officials received notice of a list of sanctuary counties from concerned residents published by the Colorado Department of Homeland Security (CDHS) and were surprised to find Rio Grande County on the list. The document was published on a website at www.dhs.gov/sanctuary-jurisdictions. This page, along with the list, has since been removed.  

MONTE VISTA - It was a beautiful Wednesday morning on June 11, as City of Monte Vista, the Monte Vista Chamber of Commerce, and regents from the Arizona Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) held a ribbon cutting ceremony at the Faith Hinkley Veterans Memorial Park in Monte Vista. 

MONTE VISTA - On June 13, the Monte Vista Chamber of Commerce and the Monte Vista Coop C-Store hosted a grand re-opening celebration following the store’s renovations and upgrades. 

District Attorney Anne Kelly of the 12th Judicial District in Colorado announces that Barry Morphew has been arrested for the 2020 murder of his wife, Suzanne Morphew, a 49-year-old mother of two who disappeared while on a bike ride on May 10, 2020, prompting a long and intense search. It wasn't until September of 2023 that her body was ultimately found during an unrelated search in a remote area of Saguache County, Colorado. Morphew was taken into custody in Arizona and will be extradited to Colorado where he will stand trial.
