MONTE VISTA — When Stephen Nicholson opened his keynote speech “Our Challenges and Opportunities: There is Much to Consider” at the Southern Rocky Mountain Agricultural Conference on Wednesday, he began with the challenges facing the San Luis Valley. He didn’t pull any punches. But no one in the room was caught by surprise, either. 

MONTE VISTA – The 43rd annual Southern Rocky Mountain Agriculture Conference and Trade Show is just around the corner, scheduled for Feb. 4-6. 

CENTER – Janet Sanchez, director of the Center Consolidated School District's Preschool, was all smiles and excited to talk about the award that they received from Environmental Health Program Manager and Inspector Gary Bruder. 

Over New Year’s weekend, San Luis Valley Valley 4-H members traveled to Arizona to participate in the prestigious Arizona National Livestock Judging Contest. The event challenged participants to evaluate eight classes of livestock: Market Steers, Breeding Heifers, Market Lambs, Breeding Ewes, Market Goats, Wether Dam Does, Breeding Gilts, and Market Hogs. 

SAGUACHE – In a festive event on Dec. 31, the Saguache Volunteer Fire Department helped ring in the New Year with approximately 200 people at its annual Fire and Ice Ball. The event was held at the Saguache Community Building.  

CENTER – The Center Consolidated School District recently announced taking part in the annual Sharing Christmas program.  

CENTER – On Saturday, Dec. 14, beginning at 1 p.m. in downtown Center, the Kiwanis Club and the Town of Center hosted a Christmas Parade of Lights. Following the parade, the celebration moved to Casa Blanca Park, where people could visit with Santa Claus. The Kiwanis Club hosted the event at the park.

CENTER – Approximately 22 people were at the first-ever Center Craft and Bake Sale on Saturday, Dec. 7. The event was at 295 S. Worth St., commonly known as the old Pharmacy Building. 

CENTER – There was a slight chill in the air Saturday morning, as participants lined up excitedly, in front of the Center Viking Youth Club for its first-ever Turkey Trot on Nov. 23.  

CENTER – A benefit dinner for beloved former CHS baseball coach Lloyd Garcia will be held on Friday, Nov. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Center Consolidated School District Cafeteria.

CENTER – First grade teacher Lindsay Stillwagon was all smiles when talking about the Super Student program that K-5 classrooms are using in the Center Consolidated School District. 

CENTER – The Center Community Park will be receiving a facelift. Town Manager Cole Webb said the park’s old playground equipment would be removed and new equipment would be installed. 

CENTER – On Tuesday, Sept. 24, at the Town of Center Board of Trustees and Center Police Department Chief Aaron Fresquez honored two students who helped save the life of their fellow classmate at Center Consolidated School District.  

CENTER – A suicide awareness color run took place on Friday morning, Sept. 13. The race began at the Center Viking Youth Club, 386 S. Broadway, Center. The race involved students from the Center Consolidated School District, and all that attended either ran or walked back to the Center Viking Youth Club.  

CENTER – The town of Center was rocked with music, a tailgate party, and a ribbon cutting ceremony for their new football field. The excitement all took place on Friday, Sept. 6, beginning at Center Town Park.   

MONTE VISTA – The San Luis Valley Potato Festival is less than a week away. This year’s festival will be held on Sept. 7 at Chapman Park in Monte Vista. 

CENTER – From an electronic bull, to thrilling children’s rides, facepainting, water gun fights, vendors, and food trucks, Center’s first-ever Mardi Gras all began in the morning with a colorful parade on Aug. 24.

CENTER – An accident involving a semi-truck into a power pole on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 28, caused parts of Center to be without power and internet, according to Facebook posts by the Center Consolidated School District and the San Luis Valley Rural Electric Cooperative.
