MONTE VISTA – The San Luis Valley Rattlers mountain biking team concluded the season at the Colorado High School State Mountain Bike Racing championship on Oct. 19-20 at the Spring Valley Campus of Colorado Mountain College in Glenwood Springs.
Four Rattlers had advanced to the state event.
The freshman boys division was the first race as Del Norte’s Kife Mashburn and Sargent’s Cooper Webb started in the back third of the 154-rider field. The two had a good competition against each other as Webb passed Mashburn in the last quarter mile, but Mashburn regained the lead. Mashburn finished in 123rd place and Webb was 124th.
There were 146 riders in the sophomore boys division with Owen Barr and Will Walker, both from Monte Vista, competing. Barr jumped 21 places to finish in 77th place, and Walker completed the course in less than an hour to finish 43rd despite a couple of minor crashes. Both riders improved their course times from last year.
The Rattlers competed in the Crystal Division of the Colorado High School Cycling League.
For next season, the recruiting efforts will begin in the spring and the races will begin in July.
Interested middle school and high school students are encouraged to check out the team’s web site at www.slvmbt to reach out to the coaches at any time.
