SAGUACHE – In a festive event on Dec. 31, the Saguache Volunteer Fire Department helped ring in the New Year with approximately 200 people at its annual Fire and Ice Ball. The event was held at the Saguache Community Building.
Jessica Phillips, head of the Saguache Fire Auxiliary and wife to one of the firefighters and mother to another firefighter, said the event went well.
“It went really well. There were a lot of auction items, and that seemed to be a fun event for everyone. The band was great, everyone seemed to be really enjoying themselves. The food was good. I think it went really well,” she said.
This was the third year in a row the Saguache Volunteer Fire Department has held the event. It featured a tasty dinner of a hickory and oak smoked brisket, with a special homemade barbecue sauce. There was a nice salad, flavorful baked beans, a dinner roll, and twice-baked potatoes served with bacon, cheddar cheese, and sour cream, and a dessert of your choice.
The Saguache County Fire Department prepared the meal.
“We worked the night before to decorate. We started working on food about 11 a.m. that day. It was exciting to see the event, and all our hard work come together at the event,” Phillips said.
The dinner is a fundraiser for the fire department and helps them with new equipment or anything else the department may need. Silent auction items were displayed for people to bid on, including a gun safe, a rifle, a compound bow, an igloo cooler, a fixed blade buck knife, a necklace, a purse, a freshwater fishing pole with tackle and much more.
Phillips said that many firefighters were honored at the event, including Douglas Peeples who received Rookie of the Year, Logan Boyles who received The For County and Country Award for being a first responder and for being a Marine, Tabitha Hapl who received Officer of the Year, and Noel McLaughlin who received Firefighter of the Year.
The Saguache County Volunteer Fire Department thanked everyone who donated to the event, and everyone who attended the event.
