Sangre, Sierra Grande to play for girls district title

The Sangre de Cristo and Sierra Grande high school girls basketball teams won their Class 1A District 6 Tournament semifinals Friday at the Centauri High School gym. The Lady Thunderbirds defeated Centennial 58-16, while the Lady Panthers won by a 62-41 margin over Creede.

Sangre, Sierra Grande to play for girls district title

LA JARA – The Sangre de Cristo and Sierra Grande high school girls basketball teams won their Class 1A District 6 Tournament semifinals Friday at the Centauri High School gym.

The Lady Thunderbirds defeated Centennial 58-16, while the Lady Panthers won by a 62-41 margin over Creede.

Sangre de Cristo 58, Centennial 16

Anai Medina gave the Lady Rams the early lead by making three out of four free throws, but Idahlia Garcia scored a layup and Presley Wilson split at the line to tie the score at 3-3.

Laila Garcia also made one of two free tosses for Centennial, but Idahlia Garcia made two out of four from the charity stripe. Jaydra Cordova and Wilson both scored for a 9-4 Sangre lead, but Medina scored in the final seconds to cut the deficit to 9-6.

Medina scored again to start the second quarter, but Cordova and Wilson both scored for a 13-8 lead. Audrianna Knorr made a 3-point basket, and Cordova made two free throws to give the Lady T-birds a double-digit lead at 18-8.

Wilson and Haylee Freel both scored, but Rhylina Serna drained a three to end the Sangre run.

Hallie Henry knocked down a jumper and Knorr split at the line for a 25-11 advantage at halftime.

Freel opened the second half with a three, but Medina scored three points to cut the Lady Thunderbird lead to 28-14. Wilson and Freel both buried treys for a 20-point lead at 34-14.

Knorr made one of two free throws and later made another 3-pointer and Sangre led 42-16 at the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter was all Lady T-birds as they scored 16 points and shut out the Lady Rams.

Freel led Sangre in scoring with 16 points, followed by Wilson with 14 and Cordova with 10.

Medina was Centennials’ top scorer with 10 points.

Sierra Grande 62, Creede 41

Maylani Velasquez gave the Lady Panthers the early lead, but Angel Edmonds tied the score. Alexandra Garcia then scored a layup and Jaylyn Quezada made one of two from the free throw line to increase the lead to 5-2.

Lila Fairchild closed the margin to 5-4, but Quezada made back-to-back 3-pointers for a 13-4 advantage. Yazmin Molina then split at the line and Alexia Gonzalez made a jumper for a 16-4 lead.

Fairchild ended the run with a three, but Gonzalez knocked down another jumper for an 18-7 Lady Panther lead at the end of the first quarter.

Fairchild opened the second quarter with a pair of baskets, and Bee Jenkins made a trey to cut the deficit to 18-14. But Velasquez and Gonzalez both split at the line for a 20-14 Sierra Grande lead at the break.

Jalen Laing began the second half with a layup, but Gonzales scored again. Jasmin Laing then drained a 3-pointer, but Gonzalez answered with another layup.

Fairchild and Jalen Laing both scored to reduce the margin to 24-23 and then Jasmin Laing scored to give the Lady Miners their first lead of the game at 25-24.

Velasquez gave the lead back to the Lady Panthers, but Fairchild scored five straight points for a 30-26 Creede lead. Quezada made one of two from the line, but Fairchild scored again for a 32-27 advantage.

Garcia and Quezada both scored three points for a 33-32 Lady Panther edge. But Edmonds made one of two free tosses to tie the score at 33-33 at the end of the period.

Quezada scored two layups to begin the fourth quarter, but Jasmin Laing made one free throw and Fairchild two to cut the deficit to 37-36.

Quezada scored another layup, but Fairchild did the same and added a free throw to again deadlock the score at 39-39. Molina split at the line and Velasquez and Gonzalez both scored for a 44-39 lead.

Fairchild and Jasmin Laing both split at the line, but that would conclude the Creede scoring as Sierra Grande scored the final 18 points of the game.

Gonzales led Sierra Grande with 23 points, followed by Quezada with 17 and Velasquez with 12.

Fairchild was Creede’s top scorer with 21 points.

Championship is today

Sangre de Cristo (16-4) and Sierra Grande (10-11) will play for the championship today at noon. Creede and Centennial are 13-8 and 4-17 respectively.
