Two Lady Moose wrestlers place at Reno Tournament of Champions

Meraz, Maestas both finish fifth

ALAMOSA – Two members of the Alamosa High School girls wrestling team placed at the Reno Tournament of champions which took place on Dec. 20-21.

Gizelle Meraz (115) and Samantha Maestas (120) both took fifth place in their weight divisions.

Meraz defeated Nohea Booth of Marina High School in Long Beach, Calif., by a 19-3 technical fall. The match ended at the 3:41 mark.

Maestas won by fall over Olivia Gonzales of Canyon View High School in Goodyear, Ariz., in 1:11.

The rest of Meraz’s matches included a win by a 15-0 technical fall in 2:33 over Sara Gregory of Shasta Charter Academy in Redding, Calif., in the round of 32, a 15-0 technical fall in 2:19 over Jasmine Tamondong of Douglas High School in Minden, Nev., and a loss by fall in 3:00 to Elison Downey of Los Altos High School in Downey, Calif., in the quarterfinals.

Maestas pinned Whitney Cawtha of Rocky Mountain High School in Meridian, Idaho, in the round of 32, and lost by fall in 3:40 to Xiomara Gallego of Poway, Calif., in the round of 16.

Other Lady Moose, Leah Pintor (100) lost by s 21-6 technical fall in 3:30 to Ann Porter of Gilroy, Calif., in the round of 16, Kennedy Hillis (110) lost by fall in 2:54 to Tatiana Lopez Vargas of Crook County High School of Prineville, Ore., in the round of 32, and Shaya Martin (125) was pinned in 13 seconds by Josaline Blevins of Stillwell, Okla., in the round of 32.

For the Alamosa boys team, Jeremiah DeLaCerda (106) pinned Archie Mendez of Fernley, Nev., in 1:09 in the round of 64, and was pinned in 3:58 by Jorge Rios of St. John Bosco High School in Pico Rivera, Calif. In the round of 32. Other Mean Moose included Uriah Martinez (132) who was pinned by Isaiah Cortez of Gilroy High School in Los Banos, Calif., in the round of 32, and who won by technical Taylor Simmons of Herriman, Utah, in 18-0 in 1:43 in the round of 64. Daniel Martinez (138) lost by a 21-5 technical fall in 1:47 to Jesse Grajeda of St. John Bosco High School in Garden Grove., Calif., in the round of 64. Dyson Woodward (150) lost by fall in 5:53 to Dimetry Molina of Esperanza High School in Riverside, Calif., in the round of 32, and scored an 18-0 technical fall in 1:56 over Alex Faux of Bingham High School in South Jordan, Utah., in the round of 64.

Both Alamosa teams will be out of state again this weekend as they will travel to the Peoria (Ariz.) Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
