Crestone wildfire contained

Posted: Friday, Apr 6th, 2012

A truck and crew from the Baca Grande Fire Department works the fire line just northwest of Crestone on Monday afternoon.

SAGUACHE — A wildfire that began on land belonging to Gary Boyce Monday morning was “pretty much contained” by the end of the day, Saguache sheriff Mike Norris said, with mop up operations beginning Tuesday morning.

The fire burned about 228 acres in the San Isabel drainage area, but no structures were lost. Volunteer firefighters from Northern Saguache Fire Protection District (Saguache, Villa Grove Bonanza, Moffat), Hooper/Mosca, and Center were called in to assist Crestone and Baca Grande firefighters.

Norris said it is thought that the fire began from sparks thrown into brush by farming equipment. An inch of snow fell in the Crestone area Monday night into Tuesday morning, aiding firefighters tending the blaze overnight in extinguishing any remaining hot spots. Other than a few flare-ups that were quickly contained, the sheriff said it was a “pretty quiet” night.

Hotshot firefighting teams from Arizona and California, who recently battled the North Fork Fire near Conifer, arrived from Denver and Walsenburg late Monday to assist Saguache County firefighters. Norris said the hotshot crews would be taking chainsaws to cut down any cottonwoods still hot or burning in the area.

Crestone community volunteers pitched in to feed some 85 firefighters for dinner at the Baca Grande Property Owners Association Hall Monday evening and also provided them breakfast Tuesday morning. Sack lunches were packed for volunteers Tuesday. Norris said early Tuesday that the hotshot crews probably would be leaving the Crestone area around 1 p.m.
