Janys R. Jones

Life-long Monte Vista resident Janys R. Jones, 91, passed away on Dec. 1, 2023, at River Valley Rehabilitation Center in Del Norte, Colo. Janys was born during a very stormy night on Jefferson Street on Jan. 28, 1932, to Harold and Cody Schall. She grew up on 222 Davis St. and graduated from Monte Vista High School in 1950. She married Clyde Jones on April 9, 1951, in Monte Vista, Colo., and raised six children at their family home on Highway 160.

Janys was involved in Eastern Star, Bridge Club, and Grey Wolf’s Ski Club.  She had a love for skiing and skied at Wolf Creek Ski Area for over 60 years.  She organized a group of women to do ladies hair at the Veterans Center and was involved with that for 30-plus years. She was also named Monte Vista’s “Woman of the Year” in 2004.

Janys was dedicated to her family and was happiest when she was surrounded by them. She was especially fond of spending time at their family cabin at Ptarmigan Meadows. She loved feeding the birds at home and at the cabin and knew most of the native flowers in the mountains around their cabin.

Janys was quite a character that never knew a stranger, was a giving and caring person, she had a great sense of humor, was loved, and adored by many and made everyone around her feel comfortable in her presence.

Janys is survived by her children: Art (Vicki) Jones of Monte Vista, Cheryl Jones (Neil Seneff) of Monte Vista, Cherie Muller of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Jere (Robin) Jones of Gunnison, Colo., and Kenny Jones of Blanca, Colo., as well as 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren, sister-in-law Peg Schall, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Clyde, son Doug, son-in-law Gary Muller, sister Shirley Mabray and brother Don Schall.

Cremation was chosen and services will be determined at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Kid’s Connection, Monte Vista, Colo., in memory of Janys Jones.
