Sierra Grande wins boys district, Sangre wins girls

ALAMOSA — The Sierra Grande High School boys basketball team won the Class 1A District 6 championship while Sangre de Cristo won the girls title Saturday at Plachy Hall.

Boys championship

Sierra Grande was dominant in the boys championship game as it defeated Cotopaxi 74-20.

The Panthers had a fast start as they led the Pirates 22-4 after the first quarter. Sierra Grande led 48-16 at halftime and 70-16 after the third quarter. The fourth quarter was played with a running clock and both teams scoring four points in the period.

Isiah Chairez and Thomas Archuleta led the Panthers in scoring as both scored 19 points.

Joel Tezak led Cotopaxi with seven points.

Sierra Grande plays the winner of Moffat vs. Kim/Branson in bracket two of Region 3 at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 5, in La Junta.

Girls championship

The Lady Thunderbirds scored a 54-35 win over Centennial to win the girls championship game.

The Lady Thunderbirds grabbed a 12-8 lead after the first quarter. They led 23-15 at halftime and 41-22 after the third quarter. Both the Lady T-Birds and Lady Rams scored 13 points in the fourth quarter.

Tymberlynn Rogers led Sangre in scoring with 16 points and Ashley Mortensen and Palma Enriquez both scored 10.

Jaelea Maestas was Centennial’s leading scorer with 12 points and Xiomara Maestas scored 10.

Sangre plays the winner of Kit Carson vs. Springfield at 12:40 p.m. in bracket two of Region 3 on March 5 in La Junta.

Centennial plays South Baca in bracket one of Region 2 at 3:20 p.m. on March 4 in La Junta.

Boys third place

Moffat came from behind to defeat Creede in the District 6 boys third-place game 49-45.

The Miners led 13-10 after the first quarter and 27-22 at halftime. The Cowboys closed to within 34-32 after the third quarter, and they outscored the Miners 17-11 in the fourth quarter. Tristan Martinez hit the go-ahead 3-point basket with 50 seconds remaining.

Dylan Wingate was Moffat’s top scorer with 16 points, followed by Ziah Pesqueria with 13.

Ryder Whitehorn led Creede with 15 points, followed by John Twite with 14.

Moffat plays Kim/Branson at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 4, in La Junta.

Girls third place

Sierra Grande won the District 6 girls third-place game as it defeated Antonito 60-51.

The score was tied at 8-8 after the first quarter, but the Lady Panthers took a 27-15 lead at halftime. They increased the lead to 47-31 after the third quarter. The Lady Trojans outscored Sierra Grande 20-13 in the fourth quarter.

Vivian Carrell led Sierra Grande in scoring with 19 points, followed by Mariana Loya with 14.

Patricia Silvas led Antonito in scoring with 14 points, followed by Luz Elena Parra with 12 and Shiinei Tallman with 10.

Sierra Grande plays Kim/Branson at 10 a.m. on March 4 in La Junta in bracket three of Region 3.

Team records

Sierra Grande remained undefeated art 22-0. Cotopaxi is 14-8, Moffat is 8-8 and Creede is 12-6.

For the girls, Sangre de Cristo has an 18-2 record. Centennial is 15-6, Sierra Grande is 11-10 and Antonito is 5-9.
