A prescribed fire on the Monte Vista National Wildfire Refuge will be conducted through March 28. Primary ignition days will be Tuesday and Wednesday.

ALAMOSA — In the midst of times that, for many, may feel uncertain or even frightening, the Boys and Girls Clubs of the San Luis Valley (BGCSLV) was filled with words of encouragement, hope and resilience early Tuesday morning, March 25, as members of the community gathered to honor Myissa Duran, an 18-year-old Alamosa High School senior, as the 2025 Youth of the Year.  

ALAMOSA — On Saturday, a political town hall was held in a filled Society Hall in Alamosa. An estimated 170 people attended the event, organized by Jane Brolsma of Crestone, the Saguache County Democrats and Crestone/Baca Grande Indivisible. 

CHAMA — The Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control responded to a fire near Chama on March 20 with two fire engines. 

ALAMOSA –  For 115 years, Humane Colorado, formerly known as the Dumb Friends League, has been a national leader in animal welfare. The organization has unveiled a new name that better reflects its commitment to advocacy, education, and compassionate care for animals, their people, and the communities they serve. While the name has changed, Humane Colorado’s mission to end pet homelessness and animal suffering remains steadfast. 

DENVER — The Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) board awarded the City of Monte Vista, in partnership with San Luis Valley Great Outdoors (SLV GO!), a $125,000 planning grant supporting five recreational infrastructure projects in the San Luis Valley (SLV). The projects aim to increase community access to outdoor recreation while benefiting the local economy.  

MONTE VISTA – A week after getting no official support from the Monte Vista City Council, the SLV Aquatics group was back before the same governing body for a work session on March 13. 

MINERAL COUNTY – Mineral County Ambulance, in conjunction with UC Health in Denver, is conducting an EMT class in Creede. 

SAGUACHE COUNTY — Villa Grove is a small town of about 30 residents on Highway 285 in northern Saguache County. In 2024, after the Saguache County Board of County Commissioners approved a land use application from Mountain Tower and Land LLC and Tower West LLC (Viaero) to construct a 195-foot cell tower near the center of this small hamlet, many residents were outraged.  

BLANCA – After a thorough investigation by the Blanca Police Department with assistance from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, an arrest warrant was obtained for the arrest of Rodney Vigil, 45.   

ALAMOSA — The City of Alamosa will have a groundbreaking ceremony on March 24, marking the beginning of construction for the Tierra Azul project, the community’s largest new housing development. 

ALAMOSA — This may just look like an ordinary patient room in a hospital, but to the staff and patients at the San Luis Valley Health Regional Medical Center in Alamosa, these five new private rooms are an important addition to patient care in this rural setting. 

CRESTONE — Daniel Johnson, a seasoned wildland firefighter with over 50  years of experience, shared his insights regarding the Palisades Fire in California at the Baca Grande POA offices in Saguache County on March 15.

Our snow-covered mountains are a reservoir of frozen water that melts and fees our rivers, streams and us.  

ALAMOSA — With more than 8,000 viewers tuning in live across three platforms, Colorado U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper held a tele-town hall on Wednesday evening.  

ALAMOSA — Congressman Jeff Hurd (Republican, District 3) held his first tele-town hall on Tuesday night where he took questions from individuals for about an hour.  

ALAMOSA — Matt Riviere, a 59-year-old IT professional from Monument, Colorado addressed an audience at Ortega Middle School Wednesday night, impassioned by an experience that is every parent’s worst nightmare. 

ASD Elementary 3-5 Principal Michelle Wilson has been named 2025 Colorado Elementary Distinguished Principal of the Year by the Colorado Association of School Executives. Wilson was selected for this honor by a committee of Colorado elementary principals as part of a highly competitive process.

SAN LUIS VALLEY — The annual San Luis homeless count conducted by La Puente finds that homelessness in the San Luis Valley is five times the statewide rate, as found through the local Point-in-Time (PIT) Count on Jan. 28. 

ALAMOSA — CASA del Valle (Court Appointed Special Advocate), a new non-profit, now has a presence in the San Luis Valley.   “Right now,” says Brett Phillips, executive director of CASA del Valle, “there are about 50 kids in the valley who are involved in court because of neglect or abuse or dependency issues. These children need an advocate.”
