ALAMOSA – It was quite a contrast of games for the Alamosa High School boys basketball team between last Friday’s loss to Pagosa Springs and Tuesday’s game against Centauri at home on Tuesday.

The Mean Moose had a slow start against Pagosa and lost by 12 points. Against the Falcons, Alamosa started red-hot and went on to a 49-31 win.

“Friday night we did a lot of things where we just had mental errors,” said Alamosa coach Caleb Cotton. “I think tonight we did what we’re supposed to do and guarded the ball and made some shots. Centauri is a really good team and we proved to ourselves how good we can be as well.”

Victor Zepeda got the Mean Moose rolling with a 3-point basket. Carson Shawcroft made two free throws for the Falcons’ first points, but Jaidyn Burciaga drove for a layup for a 5-2 lead.

Josh Gonzalez split at the line, and Kingston Wilcox scored in the paint. Matthew Solis made one of two free tosses, and later made a layup for an 11-2 advantage.

Jayse Maestas made two free throws for Centauri, but Wilcox scored again to give the Mean Moose a 13-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Burciaga split at the charity stripe to open the second quarter. Wilcox made another layup, and Zepeda another three to give the Mean Moose a 19-4 lead.

The Falcons got back into the game on layups by Shawcroft, Sean Jarvies and Dallyn King. Zepeda answered with a jumper, but Donovan Jarvies made two free throws.

Solis made a layup to give Alamosa a 23-12 lead at halftime.

Shandon Gilleland made two baskets and Shawcroft one to begin the second half and helped the Falcons cut the deficit to 23-18. Zepeda again had an answer with another jumper, but Shawcroft scored in the paint to reduce the Mean Moose’s lead to 25-20.

Wilcox and Burciaga both scored in the final minute with Burciaga beating the clock to extend the Alamosa lead to 29-20 at the end of the third quarter.

Zepeda scored four points to start the fourth quarter for a 33-20 lead. Shawcroft made two free throws of his own, but Gabe Mora hit a jumper to again give the Mean Moose a 13-point lead.

Gilleland knocked down a jumper, but Zepeda made his third trey. Maestas drove for a layup, but Zepeda hit another jumper for a 40-26 advantage.

Meastas split at the line, and Zepeda drained his fourth three, Wilcox hit a jump shot to increase the lead to 45-27.

Sean Jarvies made two free throws, but Burciaga scored four points to give the Mean Moose their largest lead at 49-29.

Keadon McGinnis wrapped up the scoring with a layup.

Zepeda led all scorers with 22 points, followed by Wilcox with 10 and Burciaga with nine.

Shawcroft was Centauri’s leading scorer with 10 points.

Alamosa (6-8, 1-3) played Ignacio at home on Friday. The Mean Moose will play at Lamar today with tip-off for the varsity game at 2 p.m. at the Lamar Community Building.

“Lamar is a really, really good team,” Cotton said. “They’re huge with a lot of big kids. It will be a really good challenge for us.”

Centauri (6-8, 2-3) will host Pagosa Springs today at 4 p.m.
