PUEBLO – The Alamosa High School baseball team played a pair of games at the Runyon Sports Complex’s Hobbs Field on Saturday. However, the Mean Moose lost both games as they were defeated by Brush, 5-2, and by Eaton, 9-2.
Brush 5, Alamosa 2
The Mean Moose struck first with a run in the top of the first inning. Evan Anderson led off with a single, then Brennan Maez drew a walk. Jonah Pittman was safe on an error, and Anderson scored as A.J. Baker was safe on a fielder’s choice.
The Beetdiggers, however, answered with four runs in the bottom of the first. Ben Mettlen led off with a single, and Landon Mesch also singled, sending Mettlen to third. Mettlen tied the score on Edgar Ortiz’s groundout.
Mesch scored on a wild pitch to give Brush the lead.
Malachi Thiel continued the inning with a walk, and Keeton Jilek singled. Dylan Krob doubled home both runners for a 4-1 Beetdiggers lead.
The score remained 4-1 until the top of the fifth when Alamosa scored another run. Tony Griego singled and advanced to second on an error in the outfield. Griego then stole third and came home on Foster Boyd’s pinch-hit single.
Brush scored another run in the bottom of the sixth. Krob struck out, but the pitch got past the catcher and Krob ended up on first. Azaviel Batrez then singled, and both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. Krob scored on a passed ball to wrap up the scoring.
Anderson was the Mean Moose’s starting pitcher and he was tagged with the loss. He allowed five runs and six hits and he struck out four, and walked three.
Griego finished the game and gave up no runs and one hit. He had one strikeout and no walks.
Alamosa collected seven hits and was led by Anderson who went 2-4.
The Mean Moose stranded runners in scoring position in all innings except the fourth.
Eaton 9, Alamosa 2
After the first two innings went scoreless, the Reds broke through with six runs in the bottom of the third. Chase Schmitt was safe on an error to lead off the inning, and another error put him on second. Schmitt stole third and he scored on another error.
Vinnie Juarez received a base on balls, and Everett Edinger and Jackson DeNooy were both hit by pitches to load the bases. Malaki Dalpra was also plunked to drive home Juarez.
Brayden Legler walked to drive home Edinger, and Grayson Sauer also walked to bring in DeNooy. Schmitt then singled home Dalpra and Legler for a 6-0 lead.
The Mean Moose scored their first run in the top of the fourth. Maez led off with a single and he stole second. He took third on Griego’s groundout and scored on Jonah Pittman’s sacrifice fly.
Eaton scored once in its half of the fourth. Shane Welle had a leadoff double and a couple wild pitches brought him home.
Alamosa scored another run in the fifth. Anderson reached on an error and wound up on second. Maez singled home Anderson to cut the deficit to 7-2.
The Reds matched the run in its half of the fifth. Sauer led off with a single, and he took second on an error. Two more wild pitches allowed Sauer to score.
Eaton wrapped up the scoring as DeNooy hit a solo home run.
Camdyn Montoya started on the mound for Alamosa and he took the loss. He gave up eight runs and five hits while striking out one, walking five and hitting three. Jaidyn Burciaga finished the game and surrendered one run and one hit. He had no strikeouts and one walk.
The Mean Moose had only three hits and were led by Maez who went 2-3.
What’s next
Alamosa (3-3) will play in a tournament in La Junta this weekend. It’s first game is against Sterling Friday at 10 a.m.
