Alamosa boys close out season with loss to Centauri

LA JARA – The Centauri High School boys basketball team ended the regular season with a 45-36 win over Alamosa Friday at the CHS gym.

Carson Shawcroft got the Falcons off to a good start as he sank a 3-point basket. Sean Jarvies then knocked down a jumper, but Jaidyn Burciaga put the Mean Moose on the board by splitting a pair of free throws.

Cole Jackson then drove for a layup, and Jayse Maestas made one of two free throws. Victor Zepeda also split at the line and Centauri led 8-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Donovan Jarvies opened the second quarter with a layup, and Shawcroft also scored in the paint. Shawcroft later split at the line for a 13-2 lead.

Zepeda scored the Mean Moose’s first points of the period, but Keaden McGinnis made a layup. Kingston Wilcox knocked down a jumper, but Shawcroft made another three to give the Falcons an 18-6 advantage at the break.

Nelson Arambula began the second half with a 3-pointer for the Mean Moose, but Jackson hit a short jumper. Kingston made a layup, but Shawcroft answered with a pair from the line.

Zepeda made a three, but Shawcroft did the same on the other side. Burciaga split at the line, but Donovan Jarvies and McGinnis both knocked down jumpers for a 29-15 advantage.

Zepeda made two free throws, Gabe Mora a layup, and Burciaga a three to help the Mean Moose close the deficit to 29-22. Sean Jarvies scored in the final seconds to give the Falcons a 31-22 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Shawcroft began the fourth quarter with a layup and later a three for a 36-22 lead. Burciaga and Zepeda both hit jumpers, and Zepeda made two free tosses. Burciaga hit another jumper, and Zepeda a layup to cut the lead to 36-32 with 3:55 left in the game.

Donovan Jarvies ended the Alamosa run with two free throws. Donovan Jarvies and Shawcroft both split at the line, but Burciaga made two free tosses to bring Alamosa within 40-34 with 1:05 remaining.

Shawcroft again split at the line, and he later made two free throws. Shandon Gilleland also made a pair from the line to wrap up the scoring.

Shawcroft led all scorers with 23 points. Zepeda led Alamosa with 14 points, followed by Burciaga with 13.

Centauri (12-11) will travel to Windsor for the first round of the Class 3A State Tournament as it will play Windsor Charter Academy Friday at 7 p.m.

Alamosa ended its season with eight wins and 15 losses.
