ALAMOSA – The Centauri High School girls basketball team won two games, and Alamosa won its only game at the Fifth Annual ASU Christmas Classic this past weekend at Adams State University’s Plachy Hall gym.
The Falcon s scored wins over Gunnison 53-24 on Friday, and over Sargent 67-34 on Saturday. The Mean Moose defeated Gunnison 63-32 on Saturday.
Centauri 51, Gunnison 26
Rylie McCarroll put the Falcons on top with a layup, and then Kynlei Curtis scored three straight baskets to increase the lead to 8-0.
Kaylee Vincent scored the Cowboys’ first points, but Sydney Haslett and Lyndie Sowards both scored for a 12-2 advantage. Paityn Sowards made two free throws for a 14-3 lead.
Autumn Terry made a layup and Vincent a free throw for Gunnison, but Harper Russell made a 3-point basket, and Curtis and Paityn Sowards made baskets to increase the lead to 21-9.
Brooke Terry made a 3-pointer in the final seconds to cut the Centauri lead to 21-9.
Bristol Pence began the second quarter by splitting a pair from the free throw line, and Rylie McCarroll hit a short jumper. Autumn Terry also split at the line and Brooke Terry drained another three to cut the Falcons’ lead to 24-13.
The rest of the quarter was all Falcons as they scored the final 14 points. Paityn Sowards scored six of them, Haslett five, Lyndie Sowards two, and Rylie McCarroll one.
Centauri led 38-13 at halftime.
Haslett began the second half with a jumper, but Vincent scored for the Cowboys. Lyndie Sowards buried a trey and Haslett another jumper for a 45-15 advantage.
Brooke Terry made a three and Vincent and Autumn Terry layups to bring Gunnison within 45-22. But Kaylee smith made a jumper to give Centauri a 47-22 lead after the third quarter.
Jessi Munson and Smith scored for the first points of the fourth quarter. Vincent split at the line twice to wrap up the scoring.
Haslett led the Falcons in scoring with 11 points, followed by Paityn Sowards with 10.
Brooke Terry was Gunnison’s top scorer with 10 points.

Haslett made one of two from the line to give Centauri a 1-0 lead. But Angelise Garcia made a layup to give the Farmers a 2-1 edge.
That would be Sargent’s only lead of the game as Centauri scored the next 13 points. Lyndie Sowards scored five points, and Rylie McCarroll and Haslett four.
Garcia made two free throws to end the run, but Haslett scored again.
Kimmy Pargin and her sister, Kandace, both scored, but Paityn Sowards made one of two free throws for a 17-8 Falcons lead at the end pf the first quarter.
Rylie McCarroll scored the first four points of the second quarter, but Kimmy Pargin made one of two from the line, and Garcia drained a 3-pointer to bring the Farmers within 21-12.
Rylie McCarroll scored in the paint, but Aubrey Naranjo also scored for Sargent. Haslett made one of two charity tosses and Curtis a 3-pointer.
Kimmy Pargin made a three to cut the Centauri lead to 28-18 at halftime.
Naranjo opened the second half with a layup, but Haslett answered with a layup of her own. Naranjo made another layup, but Curtis drained another trey, and Rylie McCarroll knocked down two jumpers for a 37-22 advantage.
Kimmy Pargin and Naranjo closed the lead to 39-26, but Macy McCarroll made a layup. She later made one of two free throws to give the Falcons a 42-26 lead after the third quarter.
Haslett scored the first points of the fourth quarter, but Kimmy Pargin and Garcia both scored three.
Centauri then scored the next 17 points with Curtis scoring 10 of them, Russell five and Paityn Sowards two.
Curtis led the Falcons in scoring with 18 points, followed by Rylie McCarroll with 16.
Kimmy Pargin led Sargent with 12 points, and Garcia scored 10.

Brooke Terry scored the first points of the game, but the Mean Moose scored the next 16. Audrina Knorr scored eight of the points, Jaelin Garcia four, and Arreli Felix and Aubrey Rothermich scored two apiece.
Kat Rodriguez closed out the quarter with two free throws to cut the Alamosa lead to 16-4.
Vincent split at the line to open the second quarter, and she made two more free throws, followed by a Merci Williams layup to close the deficit to 16-9.
But the Mean Moose had another long run, this time scoring 13 straight points. Rothermich and Knorr both scored four points in the run, Garcia three, and Felix and Leela Gutierrez one.
After two free throws by Autumn Terry, Felix scored another layup to give Alamosa a 31-11 advantage at halftime.
Williams opened the third quarter with a jumper, but Garcia scored six points, Felix three, and Knorr, Gutierrez and Kyla Hawkins two for a 46-13 lead.
Vincent and Autumn Terry both scored for the Cowboys, but Brooklyn Schrader made one of two free throws for a 47-17 Alamosa lead at the end of the third period.
Vincent scored the first points of the fourth quarter, but Hawkins scored again. Autumn Terry scored four points, and after Schrader scored, Caroline Sudderth and Autumn Terry both scored to close the Mean Moose lead to 51-27.
Hawkins scored four points, and after a three by Kelaney Diamond, Schrader scored four points, Hawkins two, and Kamryn Moeller and Ashlyn Rice one apiece to wrap up the scoring.
Knorr was Alamosa’s leading scorer with 14 points, followed by Garcia with 13 and Hawkins with 10.
Autumn Terry scored 10 points to lead the Cowboys.

What’s next
Alamosa (5-1), Centauri (4-2) and Sargent (5-1) will all go on their holiday breaks. The Mean Moose and Falcons will next travel to the Western Slope where Alamosa will play at Montrose on Jan. 9 and at Delta on Jan. 10. Centauri will play at Delta on Jan. 9, and at Montrose on Jan. 10. The Farmers will host Creede on Jan. 9.
