Alamosa girls qualify five wrestlers to state

ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School girls wrestling team finished in fourth place at the Class 4A Region 3 Tournament which took place this past weekend in Hotchkiss.

The Mean Moose scored 97 ½ points and they trailed Olathe with 155, Meeker with 114, and North Fork with 108 ½.

Alamosa qualified five wrestlers to this weekend’s state meet. It was led by two regional champions in Gizelle Meraz (115) and Samatha Maestas (120).

Meraz won by a 17-1 technical fall over Montezuma-Cortez’s CeJae Snyder. The fall came at the 2:49 mark.

Maestas pinned Eagle Valley’s Luvlyn Ward in 1:56.

Alamosa had one more regional finalist in Kenney Hillis at 105 pounds. However, she was pinned by Coal Ridge’s Lexi Thurmon in 41 seconds.

Also qualifying for the Mean Moose were Leah Pintor who was third at 100 pounds, and Tiyonna Tyson who was fourth at 190.

Class 4A Region 1

The Antonito girls wrestling team took seventh place and Monte Vista eighth at the Class 4A Region 1 Tournament this past weekend at the Lamar Community Building.

Antonito scored 68 points and it had four state qualifiers in Alyssa Abeyta who was third at 100 pounds, Laycee Maez who was fourth at 145, and Eliza Garcia who was fourth at 120.

Garcia had to compete in a wrestle-back against Lamar’s Emma McCoy and Garcia won by fall at 4:39.

Abigail Gray finished fifth at 235. She advanced to state to help fill out the bracket.

Monte Vista finished with 65 points and it also had three state qualifiers. It had one finalist in Malia Martinez-Castro at 170 pounds, but she was pinned by Pueblo Central’s Maliyah Sandoval in 10 seconds.

Also qualifying for the Pirates were Annika Butero who was third at 140, and Addison Temple who was third at 145.

Centauri was 14th with 24 points and it had one qualifier in Lauren Gallegos who was fourth at 130.

Center was 16th with 11 points, and Del Norte was 17th with four. Neither had a state qualifier.

Defending state champion Pueblo Central easily won the regional championship with 260 points – 100 points ahead of second-place Lamar.
