CENTER – The Alamosa High School girls soccer team won its second straight game to open the 2026 season as it defeated Florence, 5-0, Tuesday at Center High School’s field.
“I’m super excited,” said Alamosa coach Kelly Wubben. “I think my girls played great today. A 5-0 win is not bad.”
The Mean Moose scored the first goal in the 30th minute as Araceli Molina took a pass from Jayden Wubben and put the ball into the goal.
The lead remained 1-0 at halftime.
Alamosa then got four straight goals from Leah Higareda in the second half. She first scored in the 49th minute with Maran Formisano getting credited with the assist.
A hand ball in the goalkeeper’s box resulted in a penalty kick, which Higareda put past Huskies’ keeper Lillian Roe for a 3-0 lead in the 59th minute.
Higareda completed the hat trick in the 69th minute off a Jayden Wubben assist.
Higareda wrapped up the scoring in the 76th minute with a direct kick she placed just over Roe’s hands.
“Leah had an awesome game,” coach Wubben said. “Araceli scored one, and Jayden assisted two. So I think overall we worked together as a team. The second half was definitely much better – passing to teammates and keeping possessions.”
Freshman Kylie Cantu made her first start in goal for the Mean Moose and she recorded the shutout. She had five saves in the game.
“I thought Kylie played awesome,” Coach Wubben said. “She saved every ball that came to her. She’s just starting out, but she’s going to be a great goalie.”
Alamosa (2-0) played at Mullen on Thursday. The score and stats were unavailable as of press time.
The Mean Moose will return to Center today to host Lamar. The opening kickoff is at noon.
“It’s a busy week this week,” coach Wubben said.
