ALAMOSA – The top-ranked Alamosa High School boys wrestling got the season off to a big start on Wednesday as the Mean Moose defeated fifth-ranked and defending state champion Brush 73-6 at the AHS gym.

Alamosa won all but one match in the dual meet.

“It was a good dual, but you have to keep in mind they just finished with football and we were a couple weeks ahead of them as far as practice and condition,” said Alamosa coach Rusty Johnson. “But I thought we wrestled really well. They had a couple of their better guys out of the line-up today and we were pretty much at full strength. I have one guy who was playing football for Sanford that’s out too. We’ll get a little more solid. I thought we did a lot of stuff really well, but we saw a lot of stuff we need to improve on. But overall, it was a really good start.”

The Mean Moose got off to a good start as Julian Naranjo won by a 16-5 major decision over Yahir Ortiz Fajardo. They won the next two matches by technical fall as Jeremiah DeLaCerda defeated Eian Blake 15-0 at the 3:15 mark at 113 pounds, and Jonovan Gutierrez won 15-0 over Diego Gonzalez at the end of the first period at 120.

Anthony Meder recorded the first fall of the match as he pinned Dustin Hernandez on just 51 seconds at 126 pounds.

Pablito Rodriguez took a forfeit win at 134 pounds to increase the score to 26-0.

The Martinez brothers – Uriah and Daniel – won the next two matches by fall. Uriah pinned Kason Stegner in 1:34 at 138, and Daniel won at the 4:26 mark over Elias Barraza at 144.

Elijah Salazar also won by forfeit at 150, and the Mean Moose had wins by fall in the next two matches. Tony Griego pinned Alizar Acosta in 3:35 at 157, and Caleb Quintana pinned Zatden Haswell in 2:52 at 165.

The Beetdiggers’ only win came at 175 pounds as Austin Ley pinned Alexis Chavez in 126.

Jovanny Mendoza won by forfeit at 190, and Max Dokson won by a 16-1 technical fall at the 2:25 mark over Cole Goff. Aaron Jordan wrapped up the dual by pinning Kaeden Bonilla at the 3:38 mark in the 285-pound match.

Alamosa (1-0) will head to Rocky Ford on Saturday to compete in that dual meet tournament.

“We’ll have five duals and we should hit some good teams there,” Johnson said. “I expect us to do well there. Our next good text will be when we go to the Montrose Tournament. That will be a good tournament for us.”
