MONTE VISTA – It all came down to the final match when the Monte Vista High School wrestling team, ranked seventh in Class 2A, hosted Alamosa, ranked second in 3A, Thursday at the MVHS gym.
The Mean Moose won that final match and ended up with a 42-34 win over the Pirates.
“It was a tough, tough dual,” said Alamosa coach Rusty Johnson. “I didn’t think we were going to win when we came in because half of my team has the flu and I had to keep a few of them home. But Monte Vista is in the same boat. I thought if we were both a full strength, I thought it would be a really close dual, and neither one of us was at full strength and it came down to the last match.”
Jeremiah DeLaCerda gave the Mean Moose the early lead as he pinned Mathieu Dean in 1:08 at 106 pounds.
Matthew Rodriguez put the Pirates on the board with a 13-3 major decision over Jonovan Gutierrez at 113 pounds. Gutierrez scored an early takedown, but Rodriguez tied the score in the second period. Rodriguez scored 10 points in the third period to take the win.
Alamosa won the next two matches by fall. Anthony Meder pinned Jaxon Owsley in 1:05 at 120 pounds, and Pablito Rodriguez pinned Stetson Romero in 1:37 at 126.
Uriah Martinez continued the Alamosa winning streak as he won by a 7-1 decision over Elijah Baumgardner at 132. Martinez scored the first points of the match with a takedown, but Baumgardner recorded an escape. Baumgardner started the second period in the down position and Martinez took advantage with a near-fall. There was no scoring in the third period, and the Mean Moose had a 21-4 lead.
Jon Enderle got the Pirates back on the board with a forfeit win at 138.
Caleb Quintana gave the Mean Moose another win as he won by an 8-4 decision over Kyler Lake at 144. Quintana got a takedown and a two-point near-fall in the first period. He started in the down position in the fourth period but recorded an escape.
In the third period, Lake started on the bottom and scored an escape and then a takedown. However, Lake was called for an illegal hold resulting in a point for Quintana. Quintana also got an escape for the final scoring of the match.
Dyson Woodward then won by forfeit at 150 to extend the Alamosa lead to 30-10.
Kevin Cisneros then pinned Ryan Cordova in 1:47 at 157.
Jace Morgan recorded a fall in 1:47 over Porter Shawcroft at 165 for a 36-16 Alamosa lead.
Jacob Pacheco won by forfeit at 175, Julian Pacheco pinned Max Dokson in 3:46 at 190, and Lucas Pino won by forfeit at 215 to bring the Pirates within a 36-34 deficit.
In the final match of the dual meet, Aaron Jordan pinned Joshua Salazar in 2:33 at 285 pounds to give the Mean Moose the victory.
Alamosa wrestled a dual meet at third-ranked Brush on Friday which also included Adams City. Today, they will be at the Abraham Lincoln Invitational.
“We’ve won that tournament the last two years,” Johnson said.
Monte Vista will be at a dual meet tournament at Centauri today.
