ASU Theatre Dept presents another powerful fall season

Creede improv, thrilling adaptation, new work and old work made new

ALAMOSA — With a well-earned reputation for launching captivating, entertaining, engaging, relevant and often thought-provoking theatre productions, this fall, ASU Theatre Department does not disappoint.

Straight from Creede Repertory Theatre, audiences will be highly entertained with improv comedy experiences that promise “mad energy and insane moments” in the thrust stage of the Xperimental Theatre.

But before anyone gets too settled, just two weeks later, Dr. John Taylor – Director, School of Visual and Performing Arts and Chair, ASU Theatre Department – brings to the SLV Federal Main Stage an adaptation of Stephen King’s classic thriller “Misery”. If the past predicts the future, Taylor – always bold in his choices – will produce a theatrical experience that will linger in people’s imaginations for quite a while to come.

Showcasing new talent in October, audiences will be introduced to the work of ASU Senior Jay Loebeck in the production of “A Clown’s Guide to the 5 Stages of Grief”, part of Loebeck’s Senior Thesis Capstone Project.

And, finally, no holiday season in Alamosa would truly be complete without ASU mounting a production worthy of the magical season itself. This year, in celebration of one of the most enduring holiday classics, the tale of ol’ Ebenezer Scrooge, the infamous three ghosts and – of course – Tiny Tim is brought to the stage in a version tailor-made for the San Luis Valley.

Performances are held in one of two spaces (Xperimental Theater or SLV Federal Bank Main Stage Theater)  in the Adams State University Theater building. 208 Edgemont in Alamosa.

Tickets can be easily purchased by either going to https://www.adams.edu/academics/undergraduate/theatre/purchase-tickets/ , making a purchase in person at the box office in the theatre Monday through Friday 2:30pm to 5:00 pm or by calling the box office at 719-587-8499.

More specifics for each production are as follows.

Creede Repertory Theatre’s “Boomtown! Improv Comedy at Adams State” , with shows on September 9, 10 and 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the Xperimental Theater, a great space that is adjacent to the SLV Federal Bank Main Stage in the

As ASU’s Theatre page reads, “Nineteen years of shenanigans! Get ready for pure chaos, no cap. Expect mad energy, insane moments, and a whole lotta ‘WTF just happened?’ vibes.”

Just two weeks later--

Misery

September 26, 27, Oct. 3, 4 at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee on October 5 at 2:00 p.m.

“Stephen King’s classic novel comes to life on stage. Misery follows successful romance novelist Paul Sheldon, who is rescued from a car crash by his “number one fan,” Annie Wilkes, and wakes up captive in her secluded home. While Paul is convalescing, Annie read his latest book and becomes enraged when she discovers the author has killed off her favorite character, Misery Chastain. Annie forces Paul to write a new Misery novel, and he quickly realizes Annie has no intention of letting him go anywhere. The irate Annie has Paul writing as if his life depends on it, and it does.”

“A Clown’s Guide to the 5 Stages of Grief”

October 22, 23, 24 at 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

“One of the holiday season’s favorite tales has been transformed into a gut-busting, fun, and family-friendly theatrical experience that incorporates the details of your own San Luis Valley into the script. Take a spin with Ebenezer, all three Ghosts, Tiny Tim, and more in this music-filled show. Fun for all ages!”

Nothing can truly compare with a live theatre production, and this fall is the perfect time to experience that firsthand.
