SAN LUIS VALLEY — Watermelon and barbecues, zucchini wars, canning tomatoes, back to school and the Early Iron Festival in Alamosa all signify the end of summer. Why not add a gorgeous quilt show to your list of fun things to do?
The San Luis Valley Quilt Guild will present this year’s dazzling quilt show at the Alamosa Public Library at 300 Hunt Ave. from Tuesday, Aug. 19 through Saturday, Sept. 6. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, Aug. 23, at 11 a.m. in which guild members will serve as curators of the show.
This year’s Challenge theme is “Repurpose, Recycle, Reuse!” Guild members were challenged to use items not usually found in quilts, use scraps of fabric left-over from previous projects or use anything on hand such as orphan blocks or binding strips, or cut up unfinished projects and reimagine them into something better! The results are wild, fun and intriguing!
San Luis Valley Quilt Guild members also participated in a “Round Robin” activity this year which will be on display. Each participant submitted a “center medallion” block to a group of five fellow members who each added their creativity to the quilt. Finally, the day arrives for the “Great Reveal” when the owner of the quilt gets to see how her original piece has evolved into a splendid array of colors, designs and techniques! This year’s Challenge quilts, Round Robin quilts and a number of new and vintage quilts will be on display.
Celebrate the end of summer by stopping by to enjoy the variety, creativity and mastery of these quilts. And you can enjoy the hundreds of vintage vehicles and rodders in Cole Park during the Early Iron Festival and take in the quilt show adjacent to the park in the Alamosa Public Library on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 29 and 30.
