Early Iron Festival celebrates 44th year

An Alamosa Labor Day tradition

ALAMOSA — You know it’s Labor Day weekend in Alamosa when you’re at a stoplight at State Avenue and Main Street behind a truck from the 1930s and a car from the 1950s that have been perfectly restored, in the next lane a hot rod that looks like it’s going 90 miles an hour just sitting still and across the intersection from a car that’s been painted to be a  real work of art.

There are car clubs and car shows and then there is…the Early Iron Festival.

Now celebrating its 44th year, the “Early Iron”, as it’s commonly called, started in Alamosa and is truly unlike anything else. Over 600 rodders and car show enthusiasts come from Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, Utah and Kansas to gather in Alamosa where they spend the next three days enjoying good food, good friends (new and old), good music, slow cruising, private events and, of course, a chance to see some of the most amazing hot rods…anywhere.

As they say on their website, Early Iron Club is a group of car enthusiasts that joined together to promote the interest of street rodding in an environment that is safe, fun, and family orientated.

The festival starts on Friday, August 29 and goes through Sunday, August 31. This year’s schedule is as full as ever.
