ALAMOSA – A total of five additional basketball teams have also punched their tickets for their respective Great 8s fowling regional action this past weekend.
Class 3A
Fourth-ranked Centauri (21-4) have reached the Class 3A quarterfinals after a pair of wins in La Jara. The Falcons first defeated Liberty Common, 61-20, on Friday, then scored a 52-25 win over Platte Valley on Saturday.
Centauri will play fifth-ranked Salida on Thursday at 11:45 at the University of Denver’s Hamilton Gym. Should the Falcons win, they will play either top-ranked Denver Christian or eighth-ranked Roaring Fork on Friday. A loss will end the season.
One other SLV team played in the 3A girls tournament. Monte Vista (13-11) defeated St. Mary’s 43-38 on Friday, but lost to second-ranked Wiggins, 50-39 on Saturday., Both games were played in Wiggins.
Two SLV boys teams were also in the Class 3A State Tournament. Centauri (12-12) lost at seventh-ranked Windsor Charter Academy, 64-39, on Friday, and Monte Vista (12-11) lost to ninth-ranked Wiggins, 72-44, in Carbondale also on Friday.
Class 2A
The top-ranked Sanford boys team (23-1) have advanced to the Class 2A Great 8 which will take place at Colorado State University’s Moby Arena.
The Mustangs opened with a 69-26 win over Ridgway on Friday, then defeated Center (14-10) 39-24 on Saturday. The Vikings won their first-round game 47-40 over Custer County on Friday. All three games were played in Sanford.
Sanford will play ninth-ranked Limon on Thursday starting at 8:30 p.m. It will play either Plateau Valley or Golden View Classical Academy on Friday.
The third-ranked Sanford girls (23-1) also advanced to the Great 8. It defeated Ridgway 61-21 on Friday, and Swink 46-26 on Saturday at Sanford.
The Mustangs will face sixth-ranked Plateau Valley at 7 p.m. on Thursday. They will take on either seventh-ranked Heritage Christian of second-ranked Simla on Friday.
Fourth-ranked Sargent (21-3) also advanced to the Great 8 by defeating Vail Mountain 55-33 on Friday, and Hoehne 57-26 on Saturday. Both games were at Sargent.
The Farmers will play fifth-ranked Sedgwick County on Thursday at 8:45 a.m. Their next opponent will be eighth eighth-ranked Akron or top-ranked Merino.
Two other Class 2A SLV girls teams played in regional competition over the weekend. Center (14-10) defeated Byers, 47-44, on Friday, but lost to Merino, 63-6 on Saturday.
Del Norte (14-9) defeated Dove Creek, 47-26, on Friday, but lost to Plateau Valley, 39-27, in Collbran on Saturday.
Class 1A
The tenth-ranked Sierra Grande boys team (20-5) advanced to the Class 1A Great 8 after defeating Caliche, 72-46, on Friday, and then scoring a 56-44 win over seventh-ranked Denver Waldorf on Saturday. Both games were in Denver.
The Panthers will face second-ranked Nucla in the quarterfinals Thursday at 8:30 p.m. at the University of Northern Colorado’s Bank of Colorado Arena. They will then play either sixth-ranked Prairie or third-ranked Cheyenne Wells on Friday.
The Sangre de Cristo boys (22-4) also played in regional action. The Thunderbirds defeated Kim/Branson, 65-52, on Friday, but lost at fifth-ranked Stratton, 56-48, on Saturday.
Creede (14-9) was the only Class 1A girls team to compete in a regional. The Miners lost to Briggsdale, 63-22, on Friday at Nucla.
