SAGUACHE COUNTY— Crestone will host Independence Day events throughout the day on July 4. The theme is Harmony in Diversity-Crestone.
The 5K run starts from downtown at 9:00 a.m. followed by yoga at 10:00 am. The patriotic parade starts at noon and in recent years has been led by members of American Legion Garcia Post 110 from Saguache.
At 2:00 p.m. the first round of the Soap Box Derby will be on the Galena Avenue hill. This gravity-powered race features homemade non-motorized vehicles.
Music by Kosmos will be at 2:30 in the Crestone Town Park.
Not to be missed is the Shumei HIKARI Taiko who will perform in the town park at 4:00 p.m. The name Hikari is composed from HI, is the sun which represents heaven, KA, is the harmonizing force that unites heaven and earth, RI, is Crestone which represents the Earth. The drummers are a musical tour de force.
The second round of the Soap Box Derby is at 4:30, and the third annual pie contest is at 4:45. Music in the park will be at 5:00 p.m.
