ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School baseballteam had a rough outing on Saturday as it lost both ends of a doubleheader to Montezuma-Cortez at Ortega Middle School.
The Panthers won by scores of 14-7 and 14-2.
“We came out flat and pretty much stayed flat,” said Alamosa coach Tony Kechter. “That’s on us too as coaches and we have to get them better prepared. We’re definitely going to have them better prepared against Centauri.”
Game 1
After a scoreless first inning, the Panthers struck for six runs in the top of the second. Easton Pixler singled, Seth Oakes walked and Michael Krupa was safe on a fielder’schoing to load the bases. Bodie Stiegelmeyer also walked to drive home Jaiden Istense, who was courtesy running for Pixler, and Evan Woody, who was courtesy running for Oakes, scored on a wild pitch for a 2-0 lead.
Parker Conrad’s infield single plated Krupa, and Stiegelmeyer came home on Cory Carver’s sacrifice fly. Darren Daves walked, and Jaris McDonald was hit by a pitch. Samson Lein doubled home Conrad and Daves for a 6-0 lead.
Cortez scored two more runs in the fourth. Carver reached on an error to lead off the inning, and Daves received a base on balls. McDonald singled home Carver, and Daves scored on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 8-0.
The Mean Moose got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Jonah Pittman walked amd Brennan Maez singled. A.J. Baker’s double drove both runners home.
Alamosa scored five times in the fifth. Jaidyn Burciaga led off with a walk, and Tony Griego followed with a single. Carlos Garcia was safe on an outfield error, and another error allowed Griego to score.
Pittman and Maez both walked to load the bases, and Jo David also walked to drive in Garcia. Baker singled home Pittman and Maez to cut the deficit to 8-7.
Cortez responded with three runs in the sixth. Daves led off with a double, and McDonald singled to put runners at the corners. Daves scored on a wild pitch, and Lein singled to plate McDonald. Pixler also singled, and Connor Rosenbaugh singled to drive in Lein.
The Panthers scored three more times in the seventh. Carver had a leadoff double, and Daves was intentionally walked. Lein reached on an error, and Pixler doubled home Carver and Daves. Lein came home on a wild pitch to wrap up the scoring.
Griego started on the mound for the Mean Moose and he took the loss. He allowed six runs and three hits and he struck out none, walked four and hit two batters. Xavier Lujan relieved Griego in the third and he gave up five runs and seven hits while striking out none, walking three and hitting one. Camden Montoya finished the game and surrendered three runs and two hits and he had no strikeouts and one walk.
The Mean Moose had six hits and were led by Maez who went 3-3, and Baker who wnet 2-4 with a double and four RBIs.
Game 2
The Panthers opened the scoring in the night cap with a run in the first. Carver and Daves both singled, and Carver scored on McDonald’s groundout.
Cortez had another big second inning by scoring seven runs. Pixler singled and Krupa walked. Conrad singled home Tegan Mestas, who was courtesy running for Pixler, amd Carver’s double brought home Krupa and Conrad. Daves then hit a two-run homer.
McDonald doubled, and Lein also slammed a two-run home run for an 8-0 advantage.
The Mean Moose scored their only two runs in the bottom of the second. Pittman was safe on an error, and David singled. Lujan doubled to drive in both runners.
The Panthers scored twice in the third. Bobby Likes and Krupa both singled, and both runners came home on Carver’s double.
Cortez scored two more runs in the fourth. Oakes drew a walk and Lein singled to put runners at the corners. Oakes came home on a wild pitch, and Lein scored on Istenes’ groundout.
The Panthers scored twice more in the fifth. Woody was hit by a putch and he went to second on Carver’s sacrifice bunt. Oakes was hit by a pitch, and Woody scored on Lein’s single. Oakes scored on a wild pitch to wrap up the scoring.
The game ended after five innings on the 10-run rule.
Evan Anderson started the game and was dealt the loss. He allowed 10 runs and nine hits and he had one strikeout and two walks. Pittman finished the game and gave up two runs and one hits and he struck out two, walked none and hit three batters.
The Mean Moose had only three hits. Baker went 1-2, David went 1-2, and Lujan went 1-2 with a double and two RBIS.
What’s next
Alamosa (9-9, 2-2) will play at Centauri on Friday. The first game begins at 11 a.m.
“You look at their record, but then you look at league and they’re .500 in league,” Kechter. “They split again today this time with Pagosa, so we cannot overlook them.”
