Monte Vista boys prevail on overtime against Alamosa

MONTE VISTA – It took an overtime period, but the Monte Vista High School boys basketball team took a 65-59 win against Alamosa Tuesday at the MVHS gym.

Azariah Hurtado gave the Pirates the early lead, but Kingston Wilcox made back-to-back layups to put the Mean Moose in front at 4-2.

Kelby Mondraon made a 3-point basket, and Hurtado hit a jumper to give Monte Vista a 7-4 lead. Mondragon drained another three to increase the lead to 10-4.

Victor Zepeda hit a jumper, but Hurtado made another jumper. Zepeda then made back-to-back baskets to cut the deficit to 12-10.

Hurtado and Manny Jiron both scored, but Matthew Solis made a jump shot to bring the Mean Moose within 16-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Josh Gonzalez made two baskets and Gabe Mora a 3-pointer to put the Mean Moose back into the lead at 19-16. Mondragon scored in the paint, and Hurtado split at the free throw line to deadlock the score at 19-19.

Jaidyn Burciaga buried a trey to again give Alamosa the lead, but Jiron made a layup, and John Jake Naranjo made two baskets for a 25-22 Pirates lead.

Hurtado made two free throws, followed by a jumper by Domyon Naranjo. Jiron made another layup to give Monte Vista a 31-22 advantage.

Solis made a 3-pointer just before time expired but the Pirates led 31-25 at halftime.

Wilcox s cored to open the second half, and Gonzalez made a layup. Zepeda made two free throws to tie the score at 31-31.

Hurtado made two free throws, but Zepeda hit a jumper and added a free throw to give the Mean Moose a 34-33 lead.

John Jake Naranjo made two free throws, and Domyon Naranjo scored in the paint. Jiron scored again for a 39-34 Pirates advantage.

Nelson Arambula made a layup and later a three to tie the score. Zepeda drove for a layup to give Alamosa a 41-39 lead at the end of the third quarter.

John Jake Naranjo tied the score with two free throws to begin the fourth quarter. Zepeda put the Mean Moose back into the lead, but Domyon Naranjo tied the score, and Mondragon made his third trey for a 46-43 lead for Monte Vista.

Wilcox scored to cut the deficit to one, but Hurtado split at the line. Jiron drove for a layup to increase the lead to 49-45.

Zepeda answered with a layup, but Jiron scored again. Wilcox and Zepeda both made layups to knot the score at 51-51 with 1:44 left in the fourth.

Hurtado put the Pirates back on top, but Zepeda made two free throws.

Monte Vista attemped a game-winning shot but was unsuccessful and the game went into overtime.

Landon Sanchez scored the first points of the extra period to give the Pirates a 55-53 lead. Wilcox then made a 3-pointer for a 56-55 Alamosa lead.

Hurtado split at the line to tie the score and he later made a three. He also made two more free throws for a 61-56 advantage.

Mora made his second 3-pointer to bring the Mean Moose within 61-59 with 50 seconds remaining. However, the Pirates made four free throws in the final seconds.

Hurtado led Monte Vista in scoring with 22 points, followed by Jiron with 12 and Mondragon with 11.

Zepeda was Alamosa’s top scorer with 21 points, followed by Wilcox with 13.

Monte Vista (9-6, 2-4) played at Sanford on Thursday but lost 49-47. It hosted Pagosa Springs on Friday. It will next play at Alamosa on Tuesday.

Alamosa (7-10, 2-4) played at Bayfield on Friday. It will host second-ranked Montezuma-Cortez today at 3 p.m.
