Monte Vista boys sink Alamosa, 59-44

ALAMOSA – The Monte Vista High School boys basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak on Tuesday as it defeated Alamosa 59-44 at the AHS gym.

The Pirates got off to a hot start by scoring the first 11 points of the game. Darrian Archuleta scored five of the points, Azariah Hurtado scored four and Ismael Medina two in the run.

Jaidyn Burciaga put the Mean Moose on the board with a 3-point basket, and Victor Zepeda drove for a layup. Tony Griego then split at the free throw line to cut the Monte Vista lead to 11-6.

Hurtado made one of two from the line, but Zepeda made another layup to cut the Pirates’ lead to 12-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Hurtado scored the first points of the second quarter, but Zepeda and Brennan Maez both scored to bring the Mean Moose within a 14-12 deficit. Hurtado and Archuleta both scored again, and Alex Marquez scored four points to increase the lead to 24-12.

Zepeda made a three to end the rally, but Kaden Mellott hit a jumper. Maez then made two free throws, but Monte Vista led 26-17 at the intermission.

Hurtado opened the second-half scoring with a jumper and Archuleta also hit a jump shot for a 30-17 lead.

Burciaga scored Alamosa’s first points of the half, but Kaden Madrid scored in the paint. Zepeda made two layups, and Maez knocked down a jumper to cut the deficit to 32-25.

Mellott made a layup and Archuleta another 3-pointer. Zepeda made two free throws to cut the Pirates’ lead to 37-27 at the end of the third quarter.

Zepeda opened the fourth-quarter scoring with a three, but Hurtado answered with a dunk on the other side. Marquez scored in the paint for a 41-30 lead.

Zepeda hit a jumper, however, Madrid made a layup. Nelson Arambula drained a three, but Madrid made a layup for a 45-35 advantage.

Maez made two free throws and Griego a layup to bring Alamosa within 45-39. Madrid scored two baskets to again give the Pirates a double-digit lead.

Mellott made two free throws, and Hurtado made six of eight from the line to wrap up the scoring.

Zepeda was Alamosa’s top scorer with 22 points, followed by Maez with 10.

Hurtado led all scorers with 23 points. Madrid was next for Monte Vista with eight points.

Alamosa (2-15, 0-6) hosted Bayfield on Friday. It will play at Montezuma-Cortez today at 2 p.m.

Monte Vista (9-6, 2-4) was defeated by Sanford 50-29 Thursday at home and it played at Pagosa Springs on Friday. It will play Alamosa again on Tuesday this time at Monte Vista. Game time is at 7:30 p.m.
