Pirates qualify seven wrestlers to state

MONTE VISTA – The Monte Vista High School boys wrestling team finished in fourth place at the Class 2A Region 4 Tournament this past weekend at the Pirates’ gym.

The Pirates scored 161 points, trailing only North Fork with 242, Buena Vista with 166, and Trinidad with 162.

Monte Vista was led by three regional champions.

First, Mathieu Dean defeated Tallin Hall of North Fork in the 106-pound championship. Dean recorded an escape in the second period, but Hall got a point as Dean was called for locked hands in the third and the match went into overtime. Dean got a three-point near fall and went on to take a 4-1 victory.

Monte Vista’s next regional champion was Elijah Baumgardner at 132 pounds. Bumgardner won by a 4-1 decision over North Fork’s Tatum Carver.

The final regional champion was Carlos Campos at 150 pounds. Campos pinned Rye’s Hyrum Peterson in 2:43.

The Pirates had one additional finalist in Mason Mondragon at 190 pounds. Mondragon, however, lost the match as he was pinned by North Fork’s Braden Laiminger in 5:05.

Monte Vista had three more state qualifiers in Stetson Romero who finished third at 120 pounds, Jaxon Owlsey who was third at 126 and Jose Zamarripa who placed third at 285.

Sierra Grande/Centennial

The Panthers took sixth place with89 ½ points and they had one regional finalist in Trinden Worcester at 144 pounds. Worcester was pinned by North Fork’s Derick Sievertson in 2:32.

Aden Gallegos qualified at 120 pounds. He finished fourth but had to compete in a wrestle-back against Swink’s Carter Pickering. Gallegos won by an 11-1 major decision.

Also qualifying for the Panthers was Matthew Trujillo who placed fourth at 126.

Sargent

The Farmers placed 10th with 43 ½ points and they had a pair of state qualifiers. Tomas Benavidez finished in third place at 113 pounds, and Donovan Heineman was third at 132.

Del Norte

The Tigers took 11th place with 35 points and had a single state qualifier in Asher Albright who took third place at 150 pounds.

Antonito

The Trojans were 13th with 29 points and they had two state qualifiers. Both of them finished fourth and had to compete in wrestle-backs in order to qualify.

Matthew Bradley went against La Veta’s Weston Huff in his wrestle-back at 132 pounds and Bradley won by fall at the 1:46 mark.

Then Austyn Lopez faced Primero’s Tristen Holt in a wrestle-back at 190 pounds. Lopez pinned Holt in 55 seconds.

Center has one state qualifier

The Center boys wrestling team competed in the Class 2A Region 2 Tournament in Akron this past weekend and the Vikings had one state qualifier in Michael Archuleta.

Archuleta was the regional champion at 120 pounds after he pinned Yuma’s Esteban Gonzalez in 1:45.

Center finished in ninth place with 55 points.

Highland was the regional champion with 224 points. Yuma was second with 173 ½, Akron was third with 157.
