ALAMOSA – The first day of the state wrestling tournaments took place Thursday at Ball Arena in Denver.
Only seven competitors from the San Luis Valley have advanced to their respective semifinal rounds.
Class 3A
Alamosa
The Mean Moose are in third place in the Class 3A team standings with 39 points, trailing Eaton with 70 ½ and Fort Lupton with 42 ½.
Two Alamosa wrestlers advanced to semifinal action. Jeremiah DeLaCerda (106) pinned Florence’s Mikey Cornella in 2:18 in the first round and won by 10-3 decision over Holy Family’s Nester Pino in the semifinals.
Uriah Martinez (138) won by 18-0 technical fall over Sterling’s Aiden Ortega, and pinned Alameda International’s Anthony Torrez in 2:22.
Five more Mean Moose won in the first round but lost in the quarterfinals. Anthony Meder (120) pinned Woodland Park’s Zayden Davis in 3:18 but lost by 15-0 technical fall to Eaton’s Blake Hawkins. Daniel Martinez (144) won by 13-3 major decision over Conifer’s Adam Rackley but lost by 3-2 decision to Eaton’s Dylan Paris. Tony Griego (150) won by 16-1 technical fall over Eaton’s Haydn Lebsack, but was pinned by La Junta’s Santos Nunez in 1:28. Ryan Cordova (165) pinned Sierra’s Donnie Herrera in 5:11 but was pinned by Fort Morgan’s Ben Fritzler in 3:23.
Jovanny Mendoza (190) by 13-2 major decision over Wellington’s Jesse Jones but lost by a 16-2 major decision to Brush’s Ritchie Bruno. Aaron Jordan (285) won by 2-0 decision over Fort Lupton’s Kaden Serna but lost by a 4-1 decision to Fort Morgan’s Mael Zannou.
Five more Alamosa wrestlers lost their first-round matches. Jonovan Gutierrez (113) lost by 21-6 technical fall to Fort Lupton’s Josiah Orozco, Jonathan Olsen (126) lost by 17-2 technical fall to La Junta’s Jordan Gamez, Pablito Rodriguez (132) lost by 5-4 decision to The Classical Academy’s Nathaniel Perkins, Caleb Quintana, Jr. (157) lost by 10-5 decision to Elizabeth’s Luke Ferland, and Max Dokson (215) was pinned by The Classical Academy’s Andrew Richins in 1:59.
Centauri
Spencer Smith (190) is the only Falcon to advance to the semifinals as he won by 20-5 technical fall over Florence’s Damion Schaffer and by a 4-1 decision over Timnath’s Ivan Hochhalter.
Noah Weyers (150) won by 15-0 technical fall over Lamar’s Marco DeLeon and lost by 18-3 technical fall to Weld Central’s Gavin Kitzman. Dorian Quintana (215) pinned Sierra’s Brendan Lee in 4:17 but was pinned by Delta’s Alex McKenna in 2:56. Aaden Quintana (285) pinned Coal Ridge’s Brice Bartel in 4:29 but was pinned by Resurrection Christian’s Samuel Stockton in 1:07.
The remaining Centauri wrestlers lost in the first round. Noah Chavez (120) was pinned by Wellington’s Benjamin Gomez in 1:44, Caden Casias (132) was pinned by Jefferson’s Jeremiah Martinez-Miller in 1:25, and Aiden Knecht (144) lost by 13-2 major decision to Skyview’s Anthony Gonzalez.
Class 2A
Antonito
Both of Trojans’ representatives lost their first-round matches as Matthew Bradley (132) was pinned by Meeker’s Koy Weber in 37 seconds, and Austyn Lopez (190) was pinned by Holly’s Brandon Herrera in 42 seconds.
Center
The only Viking in the tournament, Michael Archuleta (120), advanced to the semifinals as he won by 15-0 technical fall over Burlington’s Jaymen Lopez, and pinned Mancos’ Traycer White in 5:26.
Del Norte
The only Tiger in the tournament was defeated in the first round as Asher Albright (150) was pinned by Hayden’s Jarrett Davis in 1:17.
Monte Vista
Two Pirates won their first-round matches, but only one advanced to the semifinals.
Mathieu Dean (106) won by 20-4 technical fall over Merino’s Caleb Frank, and by 7-0 decision over Dove Creek’s Keaton Banks to advance to the semis.
Elijah Baumgardner (132) pinned Soroco’s Arthur Redmond in 3:06 in the first round but lost by 12-8 decision to Dayspring Christian Academy’s Liam Deboer in the quarterfinals.
The remaining Monte Vista wrestlers lost their first-round matches. Stetson Romero (113) was pinned by Mancos’ Traycer White in 34 seconds, Jaxon Owsley (126) lost by 16-0 technical fall to Las Animas’ Orion Martinez, Carlos Campos (150) lost by 12-5 decision to Norwood’s Jackson Dinsmore, Mason Mondragon (190) was pinned by Colorado Springs Christian’s Judah Watt in 38 seconds, and Jose Zamarripa (285) lost by 17-0 technical fall to Burlington’s Garrett Rogers.
Sargent
Both Farmers in the tournament lost in the first round. Tomas Benavidez (113) was pinned by Sedgwick County Fleming’s Nathan Gonzales in 35 seconds, and Donovan Hieneman (132) lost by 7-4 decision to Nucla’s Jackson McCabe.
Sierra Grande/Centennial
All three Panthers lost in the first round. Aden Gallegos (120) was pinned by Cedaredge’s Cash Martinez in 1:28, Matthew Trujillo (126) lost by 18-3 technical fall to Peyton’s Micah Horowitz, and Trinden Worcester (144) was pinned by Hayden’s Danek DeMorat in 3:28.
Class 4A girls
Alamosa
The Mean Moose’s two defending state champions have advanced to their respective semifinal rounds. Gizelle Meraz (115) pinned Calhan’s Ashlynn Davis in 20 seconds, and pinned Walsenburg’s Eruka Peterson in 1:55. Samantha Maestas (120) pinned Antonito’s Eliza Garcia in 16 seconds, and pinned John F. Kennedy’s Brooklyn Garcia in 1:31.
The remaining Mean Moose girls were defeated in the first round. Leah Pintor (100) lost by 16-0 technical fall to La Junta’s Ylani Garcia, Kennedy Hillis (105) lost by 7-5 decision to Fort Morgan’s Kandy Molina DeLeon, and Tiyonna Tyson (190) pinned by Las Animas’ Jazlynn Duran in 1:12.
Antonito
One Trojan won her first-round match as Alyssa Abeyta (100) pinned Olathe’s Khloe Gonzales in 3:30. However, she was pinned by Calhan’s Kayleigh Reese in 4:31 in the quarterfinals.
The rest of the Anotnito girls lost their first-round matches. Eliza Garcia (120) was pinned by Alamosa’s Samantha Maestas in 16 seconds, Laycee Maez (145) was pinned by Weld Central’s Charlotte Ellerman in 1:26, and Abigail Gray (235) was pinned by Yuma’s Danika Dischner in 4:51.
Centauri
The lone Falcons girl in the tournament, Lauren Gallegos (130) pinned Strasburg’s Autumn Kulpa in 3:42 in the first round but was pinned by Sedgwick County/Fleming’s Brroklyn Glende in 5:01.
Monte Vista
All three Pirates lost in the first round. Annika Butero (140) was pinned by Bayfield’s Jade Kehoe in 59 seconds, Addison Temple (145) was pinned by Severance’s Austyn Mitchell in 1:56, and Malia Martinez-Castro (170) was pinned by Wiggins’ Bralynn Arroyo in 3:04.
