MONTE VISTA – It looked as though the bulls were going to make a clean sweep of the riders as the 103rd Annual Ski-Hi Stampede ended Sunday at the newly-named Charlie Burd Arena.
But the last rider of the rodeo put an end to the possible sweep as Trevor Reiste of Linden, Iowa, recorded the only qualified ride of the rodeo.
The bulls bucked off the previous 10 riders, but Reiste scored 82 points on Krypto to win the competition.
The saddle Bronc riding also had a late champion on Sunday as Statler Wright of Hammon, Okla., won on the next-to-last ride of the rodeo. He scored 88 points on Flashcard Champ and then had to wait out a re-ride by Brody Baca of Weatherford, Texas. Baca had a 74-point ride on his second horse.
Waitley Sharon of Ordway opened up the rodeo with an 85 ½-point ride on Weed Wacker on Friday and finished second overall. Kody Rinehart of Rienzi, Miss., was third with 84 points on Thin Lizzy on Saturday, and Caleb Brangham of Big Piney, Wyo., and Brady Irvine of Kendall, Kan., finished tied for fourth with 83 points apiece. Brangham’s ride on Big Drift was on Friday, and Irvine’s ride on Intruder was on Saturday.
In bareback riding, Zach Hibler of Corona, N.M., won with 86 points on Whisky Trip on Saturday.
Dalton Williams of Loveland was second with 82 points on Broadway Boots on Friday, Matthew Tuni of Dennehotso, Ariz., was third with 81 ½ points on Crossroads on Saturday, and Boyce Kraut of Kim was fourth with 81 points on Homegrown on Sunday.
There were only two successful riders in permit saddle bronc riding as Jase Stout of Bayfield won with 78 ½ points on Tator Chip on Saturday. Irvine scored 77 points on Top Hand also on Saturday.
There were also two qualified rides in permit bareback riding. Jacoby Campbell of Brighton was the winner with 77 points on Indecent Exposure on Friday. Creede Guardamondo of Avondale was second with 62 points on Wild Ways on Saturday.
The three timed men’s events all ended in ties.
In steer wrestling, Jacob Wang of Laramie, Wyo., and Sam Gallagher of Brighton both had times of 4.5 seconds on Friday.
Tait Kvistad of Hudson was third with 4.6 on Sunday, and Cayden Schulz of Alamosa, and Cimarron Thompson of Hobbs., N.M., both had times of 4.8 seconds on Saturday.
There was also a tie for the championship in team roping, Tay Tittel of Pueblo and Cullen Teller of Ault, and Skeeter Hill of Gypsum and Tommy Zuniga of Yoakum, Texas, both had times of 4.8 seconds on Saturday.
Braxton Fillmore of Pueblo and Cody Lansing of Cortez were third in 4.9 on Saturday, and Clayton Van Akin of Yoder, Wyo., and Reece Wadhams of Phoenix, Ariz. were fourth in 5.6 seconds on Sunday.
Tie-down roping had a three-way tie. Blake Carter of Seminole, Okla., and Mason Stueve of Newton, Kan., both had times of 9.6 seconds in the Saturday morning slack, and Garrett Busby of Steamboat Springs had the same time on Saturday evening.
Cooper Andersen of Casa Grande, Ariz., was fourth in 9.7 also on Saturday evening.
In the Professional Cowgirls events, Shaden Marr of Tularosa, N.M., won breakaway roping with a 2.0-second run in the slack. Katie Jolly of Deer Trail was second in 2.2 on Friday, Teryn McWhiter of Ignacio was third in 2.3 in the slack, and Brooke Henry of Walker, Texas, was fourth in 2.4 also in the slack.
In barrel racing, Emma Parr of Greensboro, Ala., was the champion in 15.68 seconds on Saturday. Avery Ledesma of Las Cruces, N.M., was second in 15.85 also on Saturday. Laura Lambert of Wiggins was third in 15.87 on Friday, and Shali Lord of Lamar was fourth in 15.89 on Sunday.
