DEL NORTE - For almost a year, the Town of Del Norte has been in one phase of construction or another but thanks to precise planning by the team of engineers, the end is finally in sight. In addition to the construction ending, the Del Norte Town Board approved an increase in town water bills after hosting a public meeting to hear feedback from residents. The increase in water costs will go toward replacing water lines throughout town.
“The engineers are working on a cost estimate right now and we would like to thank the support of the community on this project. Being able to save money now will benefit us in the future as we get ready to replace the water lines,” said Mayor Burnett.
Another proposal on the agenda included a request to close the alley way that runs east to west between Lowe’s Market and French Street. Neighboring homes that border the alley submitted the request stating that traffic through the small alley was a nuisance. After further discussion, the town board denied the request.
Burnett also stated that the damage that was done to the historical mineral well that happened during construction in 2024 will be repaired soon. “We received an estimate to repair the damage done to the mineral well located on the north side of Columbia Avenue. We are working with the engineer and will be discussing details in future meetings as we move forward.”
Del Norte Police Chief Frank Archuleta reported 560 calls for service, one traffic accident, 11 arrests, 42 citations and 93 traffic stops for May. The town has been busier than normal so far this year.
The town announced the launch of their new Text My Gov. program that went live at the beginning of May. The town collaborated with Rio Grande County to start the notification system that allows participating residents to text 91896 to report water leaks, power outages or any other issues throughout town. The texting system will also notify residents who opt in about potential outages or other issues that may impact them.
The Town of Del Norte meets every second Wednesday of the month in the town hall at 6 p.m.
