MONTE VISTA – A pair of Monte Vista High School student-athletes have decided where they will continue their academic and athletic careers.
Azariah Hurtado and Kelby Mondragon both signed to play football at Adams State University last Wednesday.
“I think Adams State is a good program,” Hurtado said. “I’m ready to build up with them.”
“I like the program,” Mondragon said. I like the coaches and teamwork and it’s close to home. I grew up watching them and wanted to be one of them.”
Hurtado and Mondragon led the Pirates to the state football playoffs in the past few years. Monte Vista also won the South-Central League championship in 2024.
Both athletes exceled in several sports while at Monte Vista. Hurtado also plays basketball and baseball, while Mondragon is also on the Pirate basketball, baseball and track teams.
Hurtado plans to play receiver with the Grizzlies, while Mondragon will play long snapper and slot receiver.
“We’re excited for Azariah and Kelby,” said Monte Vista coach Manny Wasinger. “We’ve had four players sign with Adams State over the last two years. I’m glad for coach (Levi) Gallas to give them a chance.”
Also attending ASU From Monte Vista are Alex Felix and Kaden Madrid, both of whom graduated in 2025.
