Medano Creek update for Great Sand Dunes as of June 18 - according to the National Park Service, as is typical in mid-June, Medano Creek is no longer flowing in the area of the main dunes parking lot and trailhead.
This year park visitors experienced a shallow creek with no surge flow or floating as the source area around Mount Herard and Medano Lake had only 30% of normal snowpack in the 2024-2025 water year.
For those who do still want to see the creek, a 1-3 mile walk up the dry creek bed or a 4WD vehicle trip up the Medano Pass Primitive Road is required, where Sand Pit and Castle Creek areas offer opportunities to see the water flowing over the sand.
