The horizon keeps on expanding as Society Hall brings to Alamosa yet another highly talented, remarkable, distinct singer-songwriter that could not be heard any other place. (At least not around here.)
The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is assisting the Alamosa County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) with the search for Fernando Rodriguez, 44, of Alamosa. Rodriguez is wanted in connection with a fatal shooting that ocurred on Sunday, March 1, 2026. This story has been updated to include the victim's name.
The annual Colorado Emergency Management Conference, hosted by the Colorado Emergency Management Association (CEMA) and the Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM), was held earlier this month with participation by all SLV emergency managers.
WOLF CREEK – The last week has brought winter to the San Luis Valley with snow totals finally reaching above annual records and temperatures falling below freezing. Wolf Creek Ski Area reports a 59-inch storm total with a base of 102 inches that brought skiers from all over the state for a taste of fresh powder.
SOUTH FORK – For well over a year, the South Fork Police Department (SFPD) alongside the Rio Grande County Sheriff's Office (RGSO) has implemented a community wide neighborhood watch program that has brought the community of South Fork together to learn and to report issues throughout the area.
MONTE VISTA – The 43rd annual Monte Vista Crane Festival will soon be here, taking place March 6-8. Each year, thousands of sandhill cranes follow their seasonal migration trail and make a magical stop in the area.
MONTE VISTA — Michelle Miller, aka the “Farm Babe”, had never envisioned living her life on a farm. Although she grew up “in 4-H, horse riding and doing chores on her friends’ grandparents’ farms in Wisconsin”, she chose to go to college and pursue a career in fashion. That led to years living in big cities and “globetrotting” but marriage to a “commercial scale farmer” brought her back to her farming “roots”, and a career involving a social media platform she titled “the farm babe” and time spent advocating for “farming and science all around the world”.
DEL NORTE – The Rio Grande County Museum (RGCM) will be opening for its 2026 season on March 6 with a presentation by Andrew Gulliford who will be talking about the life and accomplishments of the 26th US President Theodore Roosevelt. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Rio Grande County Museum in Del Norte.
CENTER – On Feb. 5, the Town of Center Vitality Program hosted a community meeting about leadership, building community, and ways in which the community could help take part in making the town a nicer place to live.
MONTE VISTA — David Oein, a third-generation producer from Montana, was raised on the family farm. After graduating from high school, Oein, like his siblings, chose to leave the farm and attend college. But in a move, he still describes with some surprise 50 years later, he returned to the family’s wheat farm in 1976, which he then transitioned to organic at a time when organic was a relatively new idea.

SAN LUIS VALLEY – As part of a Valley-wide effort to reduce feral feline populations in communities, local veterinarian Jodi Duff has brought together a team of people dedicated to preserving and improving the life of stray cats on the western end of the Valley, The West Valley Humane Alliance is dedicated to making sure local feral cat colonies have the best chance they can.
Suspect wanted in connection with a shooting at 12:22 pm on Saturday remains at large. Identified as Manuel Moreno, ASO is continuing the search in partnership with the local, state and federal law enforcement including the US Marshal's Fugitive Task Force.
